Bissell History

Two centuries ago, Anna and Melville Bissell lived in Grand Rapids, working in a small crockery shop. They everyday life consisted of taking care of the shop's business, and the part of schedule Anna Bissell had was cleaning the store. Since there was so many sawdust in the carpet, she grow wary and tired of the big time loss. That's where Melville Bissell jumps in.

He was a mechanically inclined man, who constructed small machines he needed for his work. Knowing that, Anna Bissell asked him could he use his knowledge and skill to create a carpet sweeper, so they could solve the cleaning problem and save time for more important errands. Melville Bissell accepted the challenge and you should be glad he did.



Bissell carpet sweeper was a success and the store was cleaner then ever. What happened after that, surprised the old couple quite a bit. People who visited the store asked where they could find that kind of machine for themselves. They were impressed by the performance of Bissell carpet sweeper so old Melville decided to patent the product. Six years after that, first Bissell manufacturing plant was built. It was 1883, the place - Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The business went well but only six years after the plant was built, Melville Bissell passed away so Anna had to step in. She was confident in herself and company started grabbing very soon. We should note that Anna Bissell was the first American female CEO.

Under her management, Bissell developed into new areas of business as well as starting projects overseas. Beside Bissell carpet sweeper, there were more products being introduced to the market. People could clean faster and easier with Bissell products all over the world.



Lightweight cleaners appeared and Bissell products were spreading fast across the globe, into many homes. As technology progressed, new products were made and new cleaning tactics applied. Bissell deep cleaning was introduced to the market, featuring an installed heater for optimized performance.

Today, Bissell owns Woolite Carpet and Upholstery business, spreading the influence across the globe. They are focused in the future and making big steps ahead.
